North Valley Animal Disaster Group (NVADG) relies on trained, committed volunteers to shelter and evacuate animals during disaster evacuations. Our volunteers are ready to drop everything to respond in an emergency. During non-emergency periods, volunteers train, support outreach events, inspire community preparedness, maintain equipment, and keep programs strong year-round. As disaster responders, training and following instruction is essential.

The Role
The Manager of Volunteer Engagement & Readiness plays a key role in ensuring NVADG volunteers are prepared, supported, and matched to the work that best fits their skills and interests. This position helps volunteers find their fit, grow their abilities, and stay engaged with our mission.
This is a part-time, paid position based in our Chico office and works closely with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Engagement & Support
- Serve as the primary “go-to” person for volunteers, answering questions, gathering suggestions, and supporting initial and ongoing engagement.
- Build positive, responsive relationships with volunteers to keep them informed, motivated, and mission-ready.
- Identify stand-out skills, interests, and leadership qualities in volunteers and match them to NVADG’s operational, response, and outreach needs.
Volunteers will help you accomplish these tasks.
Volunteer Readiness & Training
- Ensure relevant volunteer training is being offered. This may require developing new curriculum or adjusting existing curriculum.
- Coordinate training events from start to finish, including:
- Scheduling and coordinating instructors
- Coordinate the agendas for New Volunteer and Refresher trainings
- Assist instructors in preparing training materials, if needed/requested
- Securing and confirming appropriate locations
- Assist in creating and distributing announcements
- Ensuring trainings run smoothly and successfully
- Support ongoing volunteer preparedness for emergency response and outreach activities.

Volunteer Data, Systems & Innovation
- Understand and work in partnership to assure functionality of NVADG’s Volunteer Impact database.
- Maximize the value of volunteer data to track qualifications, training, availability, and engagement.
- Use data to support readiness planning and organizational decision-making.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn and thoughtfully use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to improve efficiency, communication, training coordination, and volunteer engagement.
- Work in partnership with Cal CARTs to create a useful mutual aid program

Required Qualifications
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Highly organized with attention to detail
- Comfortable working with databases, digital tools, and learning new systems
- Willingness to learn and responsibly use AI tools as part of daily work
- Ability to recognize strengths in others and connect people to meaningful roles
- Must be able to work in-person at the NVADG Chico office, some nights and weekends required
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license
- Keen interest in animal welfare, disaster response, and community preparedness
Experience required, any of the following:
- Experience coordinating volunteers, trainings, or nonprofit programs
- Background with emergency response, animal care, or community outreach
- Experience working in a nonprofit or volunteer-driven organization
